Spirit of the Open Award – 22.2

The Spirit of the OPEN Award is one of the highest honors of the CrossFit Open at Unbroken every year. Mirroring  the Spirit of the games award given at the CrossFit games each year our coaches look for and nominate 2 athletes each week that represents the values and principles that we embrace as a gym community.

“The Spirit of the Games is an award that acknowledges not only what an athlete accomplishes but how they accomplish it,” Carroll said at the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games. “In searching for a winner each year, we ask questions like: Who exhibits extraordinary character in a field of already extraordinary human beings? Who inspires and motivates us to live life, even in the face of the most extreme challenges, with a little more grace, a little more kindness, a little more resilience? It’s always an incredibly difficult choice.”

The second Spirit of the OPEN award for the 2022 season goes to Thom Whitesel & Idaliz Noble!

Although Thom is not new to CrossFit,  he just started at Unbroken less than a month ago. Coming from training in his garage, him and his wife, Krysten where looking for a way to get around others in a community that would push them to be more consistent and help them get uncomfortable in training again.  Thom showed up for Friday night lights and brought the heat, he cheered the loudest for people to push past their perceived limits and finish strong. His consistency in training, mobility and willingness to help others in their pursuit of becoming better athletes is inspiring to all of us.

Idaliz joined Unbroken just over 4 years ago. Her transformation into the athlete that she is today has been incredible to witness. She always shows up with a positive attitude and is always ready to put in the work. She often stays after classes to put in extra work. For 22.2 she was on the fence about doing the scaled version or the RX version… she chose the harder path and RX’d the workout. She fought hard for every single deadlift and demonstrated true grit and resilience until the very end of the workout.

Congratulations Thom & Idaliz! Thank you for bringing the energy and excitement that makes doing the OPEN together as a community worth it.  Thank you for being part of our tribe!
