Going For It

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re probably right” -Henry Ford

This is one of my favorite quotes to think back to when I’m struggling. It is so straight forward that there really is no other interpretation than whatever you allow yourself to think, that “thing” will happen.

This phenomenon is very predominant within a CrossFit gym. There is at least one movement that someone is not good at and will normally say something like “I don’t like these because they are too hard,” or my favorite “this is stupid.” These words are coming from the thought process that a person can’t do something, which is a very singular way of looking at something.

Also known as a “fixed mindset” it is considered to be the worst way to live life. There is no room for possibility or imagination when someone has a fixed mindset. It just is or isn’t possible. Instead of looking at life through this lens, try to move the thought process to a more rounded approach. Even by saying something like :

“I am not good at this now, but am working towards becoming better.”

This way of thinking allows someone to open up the possibility that one day they could be better. In other words, having a very receptive way of looking at life, or a “growth mindset.” Far too many times we, as humans, try to put these labels of “can” and “cannot” on tasks. This limits what we feel we are able to do and in turn, causes us to not even attempt something that we may be good at. Maybe all we have to do is allow ourselves to think broader. To think in terms of possibilities, rather than probabilities. To just go for it.

So, the next time you are faced with something that you feel you’re inadequate or not able to do, ask yourself “am I limiting my mindset?” And if you are, go from “I can’t” to “I can.”
