I LOVE to travel as much as I love being healthy and fit. If you travel too, you know that eating healthy on the road can lead to a whole bunch of challenges, but its not impossible. Here are my top 3 tips on how to eat healthy while you travel.
- Plan. Plan and then Plan some more. I recommend that all my nutrition clients plan out their meals ahead of time when they are at home, but when you are traveling the importance of planning is magnified. You know that whole “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. I know it’s cliche but it’s the truest thing with food. Especially because food for most of us is wrapped up in lots feelings. IF you don’t have a plan, your feelings in the moment will always win. When I travel I plan out my meals with the same care as I plan out my outfits and my itinerary.
- Control the Controllables. There are a lot of things you can’t control when you travel, but there are also a lot of things you can control. FOCUS on those things. Make a list of what YOU control and then get to work adding to your plan. Can you book a hotel with a kitchen? If your hotel has free breakfast, what will you need to add to make it work? Where is the closest grocery store? What can you pack with you? Can you bring a cooler? If you are in meetings can you pack your food? I always find it easier to get to carbs and fat anywhere, so part of my controlables is packing extra sources of protein.
- Don’t Freak out. Seriously don’t lose it when you hit a setback. You aren’t going to be perfect because NO ONE is. Here’s the good news, you are always one meal or one decision away from getting back on track. Take note of what you learned, add it to your plan for next trip and move on. Setbacks are going to happen, how you choose to handle them will determine your success rate.
